New Scandinavian 2027 – How Is Scandinavian Style Changing?

Scandinavian style has long been associated with bright interiors, simple forms, natural wood and functionality. In 2027, these foundations are not disappearing, but the way we approach Scandinavian interiors is clearly changing.
There is less sterile white and cool grey. Instead, we are seeing more colour, texture, darker wood and objects with a story. Interiors remain calm and uncluttered, but they are becoming warmer and more personal.
New Scandinavian does not mean an entirely new style. It is a more contemporary and relaxed interpretation of the Scandinavian approach to interior design.
Less White, More Warm Colours
White remains an important part of Scandinavian interiors, but it is less likely to dominate the entire room.
Warmer shades are taking its place: cream, sandy beige, taupe and light brown. Alongside them, we are seeing more distinctive colours inspired by nature, such as olive green, ochre, terracotta and burgundy.
This change does not mean painting every wall. Colour can appear on a single surface, a piece of furniture, textiles or at the window.
It is part of a broader direction that we also explore in our article “Interior Colours 2027”. A neutral base remains, but it is no longer the only way to create a calm interior.
Natural Wood Remains, but Gains More Depth
Wood has always been one of the most important materials in Scandinavian design. In 2027, it continues to play a major role, but the palette is becoming broader.
Alongside very light oak, birch and ash, warmer and darker wood tones are appearing. Walnut, smoky browns and more pronounced grain bring greater depth to the interior.
The idea is not to fill the entire room with wood. Combining several natural materials and surfaces creates a much more interesting effect.
Wood can meet stone, ceramics, linen, wool and metal. We explore these contrasts in more detail in our article “Wood and Metal in Interior Design – How to Combine 2027’s Most Fashionable Materials”.
Texture Becomes as Important as Colour
New Scandinavian interiors remain visually calm, but that does not mean perfectly smooth surfaces.
Quite the opposite. The texture of materials is becoming one of the most important ways to add character to an interior.
Linen, wool, natural wood, matt ceramics, woven materials and fabrics with visible texture make even a very simple space more interesting.
This approach is closely connected to one of the important interior trends for 2027, Tactile Design. An interior should not only be visually appealing. Materials should also invite touch and contribute to a sense of comfort.
Scandinavian Interiors Are Becoming More Personal
One of the biggest changes is the move away from interiors that look like perfectly styled catalogue pages.
New Scandinavian leaves room for objects that do not necessarily come from the same collection.
An older armchair can sit next to a contemporary side table. Ceramics brought home from a trip can be placed alongside a new lamp. Books, prints, photographs and objects that have personal meaning remain visible.
This direction is closely related to the Collected Interiors trend, where a home develops gradually and tells the story of the people who live there.
Minimalism is still present, but it is becoming less rigid.
Simple Forms Are Here to Stay
Colours and materials are changing, but one of the most important principles of Scandinavian design remains the same: functionality.
Furniture still has simple forms, spaces are not overcrowded and every element should have its place and purpose.
The shapes themselves, however, are becoming slightly softer. Rounded corners, organic armchairs, curved sofas and tables help soften the geometry of the interior.
As a result, the space remains organised without feeling cold.
Light Is Still One of the Most Important Elements
Light has always played a special role in Scandinavian design, and this remains true in New Scandinavian interiors.
During the day, the aim is to make the most of natural daylight. In the evening, one strong light source is replaced by several smaller lamps positioned around the room.
This creates a more intimate atmosphere and allows the lighting to adapt to how the space is being used at any given moment.
Window design is equally important. A window covering should not unnecessarily restrict natural light, but it should provide privacy whenever it is needed.
How to Dress Windows in New Scandinavian Style
Windows in Scandinavian interiors should remain visually light.
Pleated blinds in calm, natural colours are a good choice. Cream, sandy beige, warm grey, olive or muted brown can become part of the overall interior palette.
Honeycomb pleated blinds also introduce a subtle texture that works particularly well with linen, wool and other materials characteristic of New Scandinavian interiors.
If wood plays a more prominent role in the room, wooden or bamboo blinds can also be a natural choice. They are not simply a way to cover the window, but another natural material within the interior.
In New Scandinavian design, the window does not have to remain a neutral background. It can become an integral part of the room.
New Scandinavian vs Warm Minimalism. What Is the Difference?
The two styles have a lot in common. Natural materials, calm colour palettes, simple forms and a limited number of objects can be found in both New Scandinavian and Warm Minimalism.
The main difference lies in the character of the interior.
Warm Minimalism focuses more strongly on reduction and tranquillity. New Scandinavian allows for greater freedom, more colour, patterns and personal objects.
Not everything has to match perfectly. What matters more is that the interior is functional, natural and genuinely reflects the people who live there.
How to Bring New Scandinavian Style into Your Home
You do not need to redesign the entire interior.
If your home currently follows a more classic Scandinavian style, you can start with a few simple changes.
Instead of adding more white and grey accessories, introduce one warmer or deeper colour. Add a material with visible texture, natural wood or a few objects that have personal meaning.
Pay attention to light and windows too. A warmer pleated blind colour, the texture of Honeycomb fabric or natural wooden blinds can subtly change the character of a room without the need for renovation.
New Scandinavian 2027 shows that Scandinavian style is not disappearing. It is simply becoming warmer, more colourful and more personal.
